OSCE called on Russia to end impunity on crimes against journalists

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) called on the Russian Federation to put an end to impunity on crimes committed against journalists, in time for the 10th anniversary of the late journalist Anna Politkovskaya of the Novaya Gazeta.

“It is unacceptable that 10 years on after this horrific murder the masterminds behind her assassination are still at large,” Dunja Mijatović, OSCE representative on Freedom of the Media, said in a statement.

Although she acknowledged the progress in Politkovskaya’s case, she pointed out that there’s much more that still needs to be made.

Majority of journalists killings in Russia remain unresolved, she revealed, regardless of the promises at the highest political level.

“This vicious circle of impunity has a detrimental effect on the media freedom situation in the country,” she said.

Politkovskaya received the OSCE Prize for Journalism and Democracy in 2003 for her bold work supporting “human rights and freedom of the media.”

Recall that she was killed by a gunshot on October 7, 2006 at the residential building in Moscow where she resided.

Five individuals were given sentences in June 2004 for her murder, yet the investigation failed to identify the masterminds of the crime.
