PHOTO CONTRIBUTION by Deo Montesclaros –  As United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression Irene Khan visited the Philippines from January 23 to February 2, alternative media organizations conduct a protest on January 23 in front of the Department of Justice in Manila to express the plight of journalists in the country.

With the Anti-Terror Law implementation in full swing, alternative media fears that it will endanger the lives and security of community journalists, such as Frenchie Mae Cumpio, especially those critical to the policies of the government.

A month before Irene Khan visited the country, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) ranked the Philippines as the 7th worst country where perpetrators of journalist killing get away with murder. CPJ is a non-profit and independent organization promoting press freedom worldwide.
